Such is the influence of Commando magazine and schoolboy stuff like that, that even now when I've got a SA80 (the standard issue rifle) on me, it's about 10 seconds before I make the "uh-huh-huh-huh-huh-huh" machine gun noise to myself.

I do the same, but only when alone in the kitchen with the egg whisk and a list of instructions stuck on the fridge.... :D

LOL

was just talking to a mate on sunday in the pub about when we used to play army and the noises we udes to make.

Also recall runnung arounf with a bit of poo on the end of a stick chasing the girls

oh they were the days

:D

OH we used to do that as well :D

Kids today don't know the joy of running around with a bit of dog poo on a stick :D
yelling "POOOOOOOOOOOOO" at everyone

I used to run around chasing the girls with something else in my hand. I used to get the cane a lot at school.

:LMAO:

as steptoe used to say, you derty old mayn!

I've remembered another great comic from 'my day' - Valiant.

Very similar in comtent to Victor with war stories and football stories.

I wonder if anyone here remembers it, and if so, can you remember Legge's Eleven? That was the nickname of Rockley Rovers (I think) and the captain was Ted Legge, an earlier version of Peter Crouch. He assembled a team of misfits who never looked like footballers but who turned out to be great.

We waited each week to see if another player had been 'signed'. I can't remember the names of the other players, but they were a weird bunch.

I'd forgotten old Billy Bunter. In one of the girls' comics they did a female version with Billy's sister, Bessie Bunter.

There was even a TV show, starring Gerald Campion.

I remember the name Bessie Bunter.

Thing I loved about with Billy was his always "expecting" a Postal Order that would clear his debts and pay for his food - usually stolen :D The original eat-the-evidence.

Can you remember Quelch - the cane-happy teacher or headmaster?
Talk about a photo-kit for a child-abuser...
:LMAO: He frightened me and I was only 5 or 6 when it was on TV. My elder brother convinced me that every teacher at senior school was healthier, stronger and more violent than Quelch.

Is this Pooley's Role Model ?

Before everyone's time:

Billy Bunter was originally a subsiduary character in a series of stories about Greyfriars Public School.

The "hero" or leader was always Harry Wharton, who, by the time of the BBC series was a background character to Bunter.
I can remember a schoolboy from India who always had one line - " Isay---"and repeated the last line someone made.

Quelch & Bunter on BBC

Probably gone slightly off-topic, but if people can spare 25 minutes they can see what we had to put up with.

Billy Bunter was a character in a series of stories written for Magnet. The emphasis is written, because when they came out there were no drawings, and hardly any child without a governess would have been able to read or even buy the comic.

Late 1890s-1910.

I was a massive 2000AD fan. My favourites were Judge Dredd (particulalry the couple of series featuring his pursuit of Chopper and anything featuring the dark judges). Also loved Nemsis and the ABC warriors.

Anyone remember Bullet? It was a rival to Victor - and Fireball was the chief character...
There was a time when you got great 'free gifts' in both comics such as a leather wallet with double-agent ID, pendant etc.

Commando was out at the time - brilliant. There were also Western magazines out that were about the same small size as the Commando comics...

I used to get all the football comics, Tiger, Scorcher (then they both merged - later with ROTR). There was also Shoot!... The Roy of the Rovers annuals were great - I loved the one about Roy Race's Schooldays

other great stories included Martin's Marvelous Mini, The Footballer Who Wouldn't Stay Dead, Safest Hands in Soccer, The Hard Man, Mighty Mouse, Billy's Boots, Skid Solo

that post about Legs Eleven has really brought back a distant memory - I barely remember the story, but remember it nevertheless.... and what was that story about a whole family that made up a football team (was Robinson their name)?

Then who could forget Desperate Dan, Minnie the Minx, Dennis and Gnasher ?

Football Family Robinson! A player had to be called Robinson (surprisingly enough!) to play in the team.
The captain used to wear a bowler hat, even on the pitch as far as I can remember.
I think it started in Tiger, then around 1978 it started up again in Roy of the Rovers.

Was it in the Hotspur that someone had a magic patch on his trousers?

Very few pictures in them and my older brother had it and I had the Beano.

Pivotal to the success of The DANDY and The BEANO was Dudley Dexter Watkins, a great and prolific comic artist who has a unique place in the comics hall of fame. As well as drawing Desperate Dan, Biffo The Bear and Lord Snooty from their first appearance until his death in 1969, Dudley D (as he was known) also produced some superb adventure picture stories.

For The BEANO, he drew Tom Thumb, Lone Wolf, Shipwrecked Circus and – perhaps his bestknown – Jimmy And His Magic Patch.

The latter two he continued to draw until 1947 and 1949 respectively, when they had to be taken over by other artists due to pressure of work on Dudley D.
